Olympic badminton players booted for match-throwing

(CNN) -- The Badminton World Federation says it will hold a disciplinary hearing on Wednesday for eight women's players charged with "not using one's best efforts to win a match" in doubles contests at the London Olympics.

The players -- four from South Korea, two from China and two from Indonesia -- have also been charged with "conducting oneself in a manner that is clearly abusive or detrimental to the sport" during matches on Tuesday, the federation said in a statement.

The charges result from two lackluster contests in London that angered the watching crowds, according to the official Olympic news service.

The eight players concerned had all already qualified for the quarterfinals of the tournament before the final matches of the group stage on Tuesday night.

But the results of the last group matches mean the Chinese pair, Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang, avoid potentially facing another Chinese duo until the final on Saturday, the Olympic news service said.

The Chinese Olympic delegation is also investigating the Chinese players' conduct, the state-run Chinese news agency Xinhua reported Wednesday, citing an unidentified spokesman for the delegation.

"The Chinese Olympic Committee is devoted to promote the Olympic spirit, carries forward the sports spirit of equity and justice, and opposes any kind of behaviors to violate the sporting spirit and morality," the spokesman said, according to Xinhua.
