One shot dead at victory speech by Canadian politician

(CNN) -- One person was dead and another critically injured after a shooting at a Canadian politician's victory speech, Montreal police said.

Pauline Marois, the newly-elected premier of Quebec, was rushed off stage when gunfire rang out around midnight Tuesday, CNN affiliate CBC reported. Marois, who will be the first female premier of Quebec, was not harmed.

Police arrested a suspect shortly after the shooting.
